Residents at the Oct. 27 Eastpointe special council meeting urged the council to drop the road diet and demanded clearer, earlier notice for special meetings.
Jennifer Nicholas, introduced as an Eastpointe resident, told the council that "police and fire throughout this whole process of the road diet have been opposed to it" and said phase 3 funding is not a percentage but a set amount of $44,380,000, which she said would leave the city responsible for costs beyond that amount. Nicholas also listed a string of past council votes she opposes and questioned council member DeMonaco's record on several items.
Mary Hall Raiford, identified as an Eastpointe resident, criticized the meeting's public-notice timing and placement on the agenda, saying she found it "a cowardly way out" to put a single public hearing before other discussion and asked the council to provide earlier notice so regular attendees can plan to participate.
Greg Noe said prior meetings showed strong resident opposition to the road diet and questioned the timing of vehicle counts used to support the project. He noted one count was taken during the COVID-19 period when travel patterns were atypical and a recent count occurred amid construction, which he said likely depressed traffic volumes.
Larry Edwards urged greater transparency in the city-manager selection process and repeated concerns about "secret meetings" and how candidates are selected, referencing prior votes and saying residents should hold officials accountable.
The council closed the hearing of the public and moved on to other business.
