Coweta students post SAT gains; district graduation rate tops 92%

Coweta County school officials reported gains on standardized tests and higher graduation rates at the school district—s Oct. 14 Board of Education meeting. Dr. Chase Puckett told the board the district—s three high schools all posted increases on the SAT and that the district average SAT reached 1,076 (reading and writing 557; math 520), which he said is 47 points above the state and 80 points above the nation.
"East Coweta High school has shown a nearly 20-point increase to a 1,071," Puckett said. "Newton High School has risen from 1,039 to 1,053, and Northgate increased from 1,090 to 1,107." He attributed the gains to new course offerings such as AP precalculus, strengthened literacy work and expanded math professional learning.
The board also heard a report on graduation rates. Puckett said East Coweta—s four-year graduation rate is 92.3%, Northgate—s is 94.0%, and Newnan—s is 91.9%, yielding a districtwide rate of 92.4%.
"Graduation rate increases for every student that graduates on time. That is a testament to the hard work from pre-K through 12," Puckett said.
Dr. Gillian Andrew, the district—s director of assessment and accountability, presented a preliminary Cognia accreditation result and said the district earned a preliminary overall score of 341, placing Coweta in Cognia—s "merit" category. The lead evaluator—s preliminary commendation highlighted the district—s continuous improvement process, Andrew said. The district is awaiting the final Cognia report.
Board members and administrators credited the results to combined efforts across schools and community support. Puckett and Andrew emphasized that the SAT averages reflect the most recent senior-year tests and described the results as an accurate, recent snapshot of senior performance.
