Commissioners authorize DAR patriot marker; group may place bronze plaque on courthouse lawn

The Hampshire County Commission on Oct. 28 authorized the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution to purchase and place a 30-by-30-inch bronze patriot marker and directed the commission president to sign any required documentation.
Helene Kearns, regent of the Catherine Parker Foreman chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, told commissioners the marker is part of a nationwide America250 initiative to recognize citizens who supported the Revolutionary War effort. Kearns said the chapter will not seek county funding and will raise the cost by donations and member fundraising.
Bonnie Myers, who described the local patriot-marker project and placement options, told the commission the marker is single-sided and suggested a site on the courthouse lawn facing U.S. Route 50. The chapter provided photographs and a current price sheet and asked for written approval so it could seek historian-general sign-off and place an order before projected price increases.
Commissioners discussed locating the marker on the courthouse lawn and encouraged coordination with other local historic-preservation groups and county staff on final placement. The commission voted to authorize the purchase and to allow the commission president to sign necessary documents for the marker process.
The chapter said it hopes to place the marker next summer, subject to fundraising and necessary approvals. No county funds were requested or approved during the vote.
