The Los Angeles City Council recognized "Coach LA Day" on Oct. 31, highlighting a Recreation and Parks initiative to standardize coach training and expand youth-sports access across the city.

Councilmember Monica Rodriguez introduced the initiative, saying Coach LA will equip volunteer and professional coaches with evidence‑based training, mentorship and resources so recreation centers across neighborhoods offer consistent, developmentally appropriate sport experiences. Jimmy Kim, general manager of the Department of Recreation and Parks, said the program sets a single standard for inclusion and safety and thanked LA28 and Nike for financial and programmatic support.

Eric Aldridge of LA28, the organizing committee for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, described the committee’s $160 million commitment to the Department of Recreation and Parks and PlayLA programming, including investments in adaptive-sports offerings and safety training. He said the goal is to build a lasting legacy for youth sports beyond the 2028 Games.

Council members from multiple districts praised coaches and volunteers for their roles mentoring young people. The council’s recognition did not create a new line item in the municipal budget during the meeting; LA28 and Nike representatives described separate multi‑year funding commitments to support Coach LA and PlayLA rollout.
