Sunnyside council adopts ordinance annexing 9.61 acres for Sunset Ridge development

The Sunnyside City Council voted Oct. 27 to adopt an ordinance annexing Sunset Ridge, a 9.61-acre parcel at 920 West Edison Road, into the city with proposed medium-density (R-2) zoning. City planning counsel and staff summarized the annexation history: the application was submitted Sept. 13, 2024; Planning Commission recommended approval on June 10, 2025; and the Yakima County Boundary Review Board declined to invoke jurisdiction after its review period.
The city manager said the preliminary layout shows about 53 lots; staff cautioned final lot counts could change during the long plat process (road widths, infrastructure adjustments). A councilor asked whether the product would be starter/middle-income housing; staff and council described the homes as "starter-end" similar to neighboring Harvest Valley Estates.
Councilor Hart moved to adopt the ordinance and Councilor Vasquez seconded. The motion passed on a recorded roll call (councilors voting in favor included Ripley, Frosto, Vasquez, Hancock, Hart and the Deputy Mayor). With adoption, the city completed the final step of the local annexation process; the city will proceed with plat permitting and infrastructure planning through normal public-works and planning channels.
The action was presented as a response to longstanding housing needs in Sunnyside; several council members said the annexation supports availability of starter homes for young families.
