Unions report bargaining activity as talks resume; CSEA names new labor representative

Three labor groups provided public updates to the San Rafael City Schools Board on Nov. 4 about collective bargaining and contract matters.
Tanya, speaking on behalf of CSEA Chapter 341, said the chapter will add a new labor relations representative, Joseph Gomez, who begins Nov. 3. She told trustees CSEA would vote on its sunshine proposal Nov. 10 and planned to submit it to the district in time for the next board meeting.
Sarah Cushman, representing the San Rafael Teachers Association (SRTA), reported that SRTA and district leadership had their first bargaining session the prior week and exchanged proposals and counterproposals. She thanked district leadership for opportunities to provide input to the budget advisory committee and the strategic‑plan refresh task force and noted the next bargaining session was scheduled for Nov. 7.
Alex Verhiki, speaking for the San Rafael Federation of Teachers (SRFT), described past negotiations that ended without a settlement despite increased revenue and said that members were hoping to return to a collaborative Fair Share approach. Verhiki said SRFT and district negotiators would meet again on Thursday.
No formal board action resulted from the updates; trustees thanked union leaders and noted the board’s role in supporting fair bargaining processes.
