Davenport board approves 2026–27 high school course guide after debate over credit reductions

The Davenport Community School District board voted to approve the 2026–27 high school course guide after extended discussion about how the district measures seat time for co‑curricular and before/after‑school programs.

Director Bass moved approval of the course guide; the motion was seconded and carried. Superintendent Schneckloff told trustees the administration will audit the seat time for affected classes and return with any necessary amendments at the board’s Nov. 10 meeting. He said the audit was prompted by differences discovered between instructors’ expectations of instructional hours and district records.

Board debate focused on whether the guide’s change in graduation credit requirements—which reduces elective credits over multiple years as the district transitions schedule models—could unintentionally reduce learning time or narrow student opportunities. Director Beck said she was “very hesitant” about lowering diploma credit requirements and urged caution. Director Poston said he would vote no on principle, citing the board’s strategic focus on expanding student opportunities.

Administrators identified marching band and some orchestra offerings as courses under review; the superintendent said a formal audit team (including teachers and department leaders) will document actual seat time and present any recommended adjustments at the Nov. 10 meeting. Student board members raised concerns about stress for freshmen and the impact of schedule formats (periods vs. blocks) on course load and teacher workload.

Outcome: motion to approve the 2026–27 course guide passed; the administration will audit seat time for affected courses and report back with any amendments on Nov. 10.
