Orem mayor describes emergency response after shooting near UVU and says community is shocked

Mayor Dave Young said the shooting at a Utah Valley University event prompted an immediate emergency response from Orem's police and fire departments.

"From the moment I knew the moment it happened, my phone was blowing up," Young said. He said the city's emergency operations center was activated and that city police and fire were "going full tilt" to gather information and respond.

Young told the interviewer the event attracted international media attention and left residents stunned. "This is not who we are," he said, calling Orem a "religious, kind community" and saying murders are "rare" in the city.

The mayor did not outline specific policy changes in the interview but described the city's operational response and his communications with media and residents.
