FinCom moderator details voting rules, amendment process and logistics ahead of Nov. 4 Nantucket special town meeting

The Finance Committee convened a pre-meeting conference to prepare for the Town of Nantuckets special town meeting scheduled for 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2025, at the Mary P. Walker Auditorium.

Sarah (Moderator) said the warrants printed motion for Article 1 is a motion "to take no action," which "requires a simple majority," but she cautioned that "if a positive motion on Article 1 is presented ... to enact a zoning bylaw change ... that will require a two thirds vote." She advised sponsors to be prepared that acting on the substance of Article 1 will trigger the higher threshold.

The moderator told attendees she had received proposed amendments to Article 2 from Bob DeCosta and Mike Hurley. "When I have an amendment, if I know that I have it and I have it in writing, I will go to the person who's proposed the amendment for them to make it," she said, adding that the meeting can have an amendment and an amendment to the amendment on the floor at the same time.
