Madison board approves 2026-27 academic calendar, adopts new curriculum units and greenlights Bermuda trip

Superintendent Dr. Craig Cook told the board the academic calendar returns to a more traditional schedule after two years of adjustments related to opening a new building. The proposed calendar sets the first day of school for Aug. 27, lists 182 student days and 188 teacher work days and preserves a two-day February break and an April break aligned with the neighboring "learn" district. Cook said teachers will report three days before students and that the calendar was reviewed with teacher leadership and town officials.
The board adopted curriculum units in social studies for grades 4 and 5, STEAM for kindergarten through grade 5, English language arts units 1 and 2 for kindergarten through grade 3, and a geometry unit. Steven (curriculum chair) told the board the units emphasize the Profile of a Graduate, build fundamental skills and include project-based and makerspace activities. Trustees said the materials also address the state's updated reading requirements.
Trustees also approved a proposed international trip to Bermuda in April 2026. A board member raised a question about hurricane risk; the curriculum chair said trip materials include cancellation language and standard travel protections. The motion to approve the trip was moved, seconded and carried.
Board votes: the motions to adopt the curriculum units, to approve the Bermuda trip, and to adopt the academic and budget calendars were each approved by the board during the meeting.
Board members thanked district staff for preparing the calendars and curriculum materials and asked administrators to make clear the timeline and any further details requested by families.
The board proceeded later in the agenda to other action items and then to executive session for a security update.
