Resident urges Jefferson County board to back state bill codifying prayer at school board meetings

David Seal of Sam Martin Road urged the board to support a pending state bill to codify prayer at school board meetings and to set a “godly example” for students. Seal said he has circulated supporting cases and proposed legislation and that the bill currently has sponsors in the legislature. “What standard are you going to take on prayer school board meetings?” he asked the board during public comment, adding he was available to meet one-on-one with board members to discuss the issue.
Seal framed his remarks as a response to what he called opposition from “liberal attorneys and progressives,” and he told the board the legislation includes a specific provision to codify prayer at school board meetings. He also cited recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions in arguing that the legal landscape favors his position.
The board received the comment during the public-input period; no board motion or action on the subject was made during the meeting.
