Mayor Campbell Rich proclaimed October 2025 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month at the City of Stuart commission meeting and recognized SafeSpace for its services to survivors in Martin County and neighboring jurisdictions.
Jennifer Fox, chief executive officer of SafeSpace, accepted the proclamation and described the nonprofit's recent service volume. Fox said SafeSpace is the only state-certified domestic violence center serving Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties and that "every statistic represents a person, a parent, a child, a neighbor who deserves to be safe in their own home." She told the commission that last year SafeSpace served 891 survivors; 165 of those were children. She said 378 people stayed in SafeSpace's safe home and 359 received legal advocacy and representation in court.
Fox also emphasized SafeSpace's range of services, including a confidential crisis hotline, legal advocacy, children's programs and financial-empowerment services. The transcript included an unclear figure for the organization's monthly crisis-hotline call volume; the specific monthly number as stated in the meeting was not clear from the record.
Fox said the proclamation sends a message to survivors that "you are not alone" and urged community members, employers, faith leaders and civic organizations to raise awareness and offer support. No policy or funding action was taken at the meeting; the proclamation was ceremonial.
Proclamation materials and the presentation were delivered during the meeting's proclamation segment, following a brief arts presentation earlier in the agenda.
