Andrew Kreski, traffic maintenance manager in the Department of Public Safety, told the council the division maintains the city's traffic infrastructure — 46 traffic signals, 11 enhanced pedestrian crossings, about 10,180 traffic control signs and the annual pavement‑marking program — while operating with three full‑time staff, one year‑round part‑time employee and two summer seasonal workers.
Kreski said the 2026 comp budget proposes eliminating the year‑round part‑time position and two summer seasonal positions that execute the pavement‑marking replacement program. He said the summer crew is required for the restriping operation and that removing those positions would ‘‘have a dramatic impact on our department's ability to fulfill our mission.’’
He asked council to reconsider the proposed cuts and provided line‑item salary figures: $36,192 for a traffic signal technician and $19,344 total for the two summer seasonal positions. Commissioners acknowledged the division's limited operating budget (unchanged since 2019) and said they would work with staff to explore revenue and reprioritization options while the amended budget is developed.
