Surprise commission highlights veterans events and community resources ahead of November and December activities

City staff and commissioners used the Oct. 8 meeting of the City of Surprise Veterans Disability and Human Services Commission to announce several upcoming community events and resource opportunities for veterans and residents.
Staff announced a Day of Service on Nov. 15 (8 a.m.–11 a.m.) in the City Hall community room; volunteers will assemble care bags, hygiene kits and holiday packages for deployed service members. A donation drive to support the Nov. 15 activities will be held Nov. 14; staff posted registration and donation details on surpriseaz.gov/dayofservice.registration.
The City’s annual Veterans Day parade, presented by Toyota of Surprise, will begin at 10 a.m. on Nov. 11, followed by family activities in the park. The City’s administrative offices will be closed that day. The city also promoted the Scitech Festival on Nov. 22 (10 a.m.–2 p.m.) at the Surprise Recreation Campus and the fourth annual Sensitive Santa sensory-friendly event on Dec. 13 (10 a.m.–noon) at Surprise Stadium; staff provided an email contact (ashley.stevens@surpriseaz.gov) and a phone number (623-222-2284) for the Sensitive Santa event.
During the call to the public and staff reports, commissioners described recent outreach: attendance at the Golden Rule breakfast and the Veteran Health Administration Community Mental Health Summit (Upstream suicide prevention best practices), connections to Luke Air Force Base liaisons and Charlie Health, and community groups interested in participating in future VetFest activities. A public speaker and staff noted that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month; the Surprise Resource Center is displaying survivor artwork and the City is accepting donations for Hope Women’s Center. Staff provided resource contacts and national hotline information during the meeting.
