The Tuscaloosa City finance committee approved General Fund Budget Revision No. 3 to permit the Tuscaloosa Police Department to use proceeds from sales of military surplus equipment and to budget $393,000 for equipment purchases.
Carly, a city staff member who presented the item, said military-surplus equipment is received at no cost, may be used for a period, and can later be sold at auction. "Any of the sale proceeds that we get from that military surplus equipment must then be used back into law enforcement," Carly said. The committee discussed how the city segregates those sale proceeds and how TPD requests activation of those funds to purchase equipment.
Carly told the committee the revision totals $393,000 and that a detailed attachment lists the equipment and prices. Committee members asked no substantive questions and approved the revision by voice vote.
