The Tuscaloosa Zoning Board of Adjustment on Oct. 27 voted to continue a special‑exception petition for a proposed group home at 2212‑20 Sixth Avenue to the board's November meeting.
The petitioner, represented by John Tyler, executive director of Phoenix House, asked the board for the continuance. "We're just asking for a continuance until November's EBA meeting," Tyler said during public comment. Staff had moved the item to the continuance portion of the agenda so speakers present could be heard before the vote.
Neighbors spoke in opposition and asked for more detail about the operation. Daniel Hinton, who said he lives directly across the street, raised concerns about recent changes in the neighborhood and parking near the site. Loretta Griffin, representing Faith Fairfield church, said, "It's not the best location for the group," and asked how many staff would be on site for each shift and where visitors and delivery trucks would park.
The chair and staff told commenters that detailed operational information was not being presented that night and would be provided when the petition returns for hearing. The board closed public comment and voted unanimously to continue the matter to November so petitioners could submit the requested details and interested neighbors could prepare remarks for the record.
No formal action on the special exception was taken; the continuance preserves the board's ability to consider the petition when staff and the petitioner return with additional information.
