Summary
MDOT officials said the draft CTP programs more than $2.2 billion for WMATA capital projects. The Washington Area Transit Office and Maryland Transit Administration described planning work for MARC improvements, including 15% design funding for a Silver Spring turnback to enable more frequent Brunswick line service.
Jonathan Rogers, director of MDOT’s Washington Area Transit Office, told the delegation that the draft CTP programs more than $2.2 billion for WMATA capital improvements to preserve system safety and reliability.
Rogers described MDOT’s coordination role in the DMV Moves regional effort to identify long‑term capital funding and policies to promote consistency among transit providers. He said MDOT is working with Montgomery County DOT and WMATA on mitigation planning for next summer’s Red Line shutdown, including bus‑only lanes to speed shuttle service during the work.
Maryland Transit Administration representatives outlined MARC corridor plans. MTA said it is advancing platform and station rehabilitation work on the Brunswick line and has funding to move a Silver Spring turnback project into 15% design to permit future trains to originate/terminate at Silver Spring, a step MTA says would support more frequent service where space constraints exist into Union Station.
What happens next: MDOT said it will continue interagency coordination through DMV Moves and regional planning; MTA will proceed with design work and CSX coordination for Brunswick line improvements.
