Council accepts planning commissions denial of rezoning request for 212 Third Avenue

The Radford City Council voted to accept the Planning Commissions recommendation and declined to rezone 212 Third Avenue from B-3 (Central Business District) to R-4 (multifamily).
Seth, speaking for the Planning Commission, said the commission supports the programmatic goals of New River Community Action but expressed concern that rezoning would set a precedent for converting ground-floor commercial properties in a strategic business location. He summarized the Planning Commission vote as 6-0 against recommending approval.
Mayor Horton said the city appreciates New River Community Actions work and acknowledged the intent behind the proposal, but agreed with planning staff and commissioners that the site may not be the best location. By accepting the Planning Commission recommendation, the council left the property zoned under the current B-3 classification.
The matter drew comment at a joint public hearing on Sept. 22, and planning commission deliberations continued through the commissions Oct. 20 meeting. Council did not propose an alternate motion to remand or modify the application at the meeting.
