Lafayette City approves South Street right-of-way variance and several routine contracts and permits

Lafayette City officials approved a set of routine items during their meeting, including a right-of-way variance for South Street, contracts for traffic-loop restoration and landscaping, declaration of surplus property, claims payment and two special-event permits.

The council approved a variance request for the Hender (Hinder) Minor Subdivision that leaves South Streethalf right-of-way at 30 feet rather than the 40 feet called for in the county thoroughfare plan. City Engineer Jeremy Grenard said the existing 30-foot half-width matches surrounding parcels and that the city has no scheduled project that would require immediate acquisition of additional right-of-way. The council awarded the 2025 loop detector restoration contract to Hawk Enterprises for a quoted amount of $26,700, Jeremy Grenard said. Purchasing Manager Dave Payne recommended renewing the downtown landscape maintenance contract with BrightView Landscapes LLC for 2026 at the same price as the prior year; Payne stated the previously listed contract amount as $409,261.21 (as presented to the board). After brief positive remarks about downtown plantings, the council voted to renew the contract by voice vote.

Fleet maintenance requested that a 2022 Ford Explorer PIU be declared surplus so it can be transferred to an insurance company as part of a total-loss settlement; the council approved the surplus declaration by voice vote.
