Kerr County approves additional Operation Lone Star investigator and a grade adjustment; positions 100% grant‑funded

The Kerr County Commissioners Court on Oct. 27 approved two personnel actions tied to the Operation Lone Star (OLS) grant program: (1) the addition of an SOD investigator position (to begin Feb. 2026) and (2) a grade/step adjustment for an existing OLS deputy to align pay with investigative duties.
Captain Grant Gage told the court the investigator position would be funded 100% by the OLS FY26 grant (grant number 4587303). "A 100% of it's gonna be paid through operational lone star," he said about the new position, and he told commissioners the selected candidate is currently employed elsewhere and would not begin until February 2026.
The court also approved a step and grade change for an existing deputy whose duties now emphasize investigative work (use of plate readers and data analysis), moving that employee to a salary grade consistent with other investigators. County officials told the court the plan for the positions assumes OLS funding will continue at least in the medium term but that the county will address funding changes if the grant ends.
Both motions passed by unanimous voice/hand vote. County leaders said the actions are fully funded through the OLS grant and will not require county general‑fund support while the grant remains active.
