Board amends animal code to add sterilization deposit and rabbit quarantine, raises impound fees

The King George County Board of Supervisors on Oct. 7 adopted amendments to Chapter 3 of the county code to add a sterilization deposit requirement, a rabbit quarantine provision and to raise associated fees for impound and adoption.
Major Patrick Weston, representing the Sheriff’s Office and the county tow board, presented the changes, which include a $50 refundable deposit required when an animal is adopted without prior alteration; the deposit is refundable upon proof of spay or neuter. The ordinance also allows animal control to hold animals subject to potential rabbit‑to‑rabbit disease exposure for up to 10 days with a boarding fee of $10 per day.
Major Weston said the fee increases are necessary to offset higher operating costs. "These increases are necessary due to the increased cost of gas and to cover cost of the care of the surrendered animals," he told the board. The code changes also raise owner retrieval and surrender fees; adoption fees for dogs and cats increase from $10 to $25.
The board voted unanimously to adopt the ordinance as presented. The changes will be incorporated in the county code and apply to the animal‑control operations going forward.
