Proposed counsel for Orting withdraws availability after council considers engagement

The Orting City Council debated authorizing the mayor to execute an engagement letter for city attorney services with Dilley Law PLLC (agenda bill AB 25-90) on Oct. 8, 2025. A motion to authorize the mayor to sign an engagement letter was made and seconded.
Brent Dilley, who had been on the Zoom line and was the subject of the proposed engagement, addressed the council briefly and then announced he would withdraw his availability for the role. After Mr. Dilley—s statement that he was withdrawing his interest in serving, the council did not record a final vote to execute a contract during the meeting.
Council members discussed the practicality of moving forward without counsel already under contract and noted that even if an attorney were approved at the meeting, a signed contract and onboarding would not take immediate effect. Several council members said they preferred to wait until counsel was formally under contract before taking substantive ethics or investigative steps.
No contract was signed during the meeting; staff and the council indicated they would continue efforts to secure legal counsel.
