Summary
The Lowndes County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 14 authorized county staff to apply for a $2,812,500 GFA loan (with $703,125 in principal forgiveness) for wastewater lift station bypass pumps and approved an alcohol license plus several contracts and the countys Section 125 benefit plan renewal.
The Lowndes County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 14 authorized county staff to submit paperwork for a Georgia Fund for Assistance (GFA) loan of $2,812,500, including $703,125 in principal forgiveness, to install backup bypass pumps at wastewater lift stations that currently lack backup capabilities. County staff said the project would lock in current pricing and could allow equipment to be in place before the next hurricane season.
County staff also presented and the board approved several consent items and procurement actions during the same session. Miss Bowen, a county staff member who presented procurement items, told commissioners that staff had recommended approval of an off-premises beer-and-wine license for Racetrack Incorporated doing business as Racetrack Number 2666, located at 4541 North Valdosta Road; the board approved the license by voice vote.
The board adopted the Section 125 cafeteria plan renewal for 2026, which county staff explained permits pre-tax payroll deductions for employee benefit premiums, including medical, dental, vision and certain disability and supplemental coverages, and keeps the county compliant with IRS rules.
On procurement, commissioners awarded the demolition contract for the former Rascals building (site of the planned Lowndes County Fire Rescue Station No. 3) to Standard Contractors, the lowest responsive bidder at $85,174. Public works staff said the demolition will remove the structure, associated equipment and utilities so construction can proceed. The board also awarded the Bemis Road right-of-way mowing contract to Outdoor Living as the low bidder at $414,988 for a five-year contract; the Georgia Department of Transportation will reimburse the county for the mowing costs.
Each motion was moved, seconded and carried by voice vote with no opposition recorded on the official audio record.
