Public commenters urge caution on new educators' health trust; Marines thank schools for recruits

Marine recruiting: Major Matt Weber, commanding officer of the Marine Corps recruiting station that covers northern Florida and southern Georgia, thanked Flagler Schools for the district's role in preparing students and noted 24 graduates from the district enlisted in the Marines last year with five additional recruits expected to ship to training in the coming months. He also described scholarship and officer pathways offered through Marine officer selection and NROTC/scholarship programs.
FLEET concerns: Ron Long urged the board not to move quickly on joining the new Florida Educators Health Trust (referred to in public comments as "FLEET"), citing a Florida TaxWatch report that warned of a potential shortfall in the state employee health insurance trust and saying that the transition could lead to higher employee contributions and large family premiums. He also raised complaints that lower-cost plans may carry high out-of-pocket costs and that dental and vision benefits in some plans are minimal. Mr. Long asked the board to "do our homework" and not adopt the program solely because other districts have done so.
No board action on FLEET was taken during the meeting; the comments were entered into the record for board consideration.
