Santaquins Development Review Committee on Oct. 28 denied a request to install flashing speed-feedback signs near 300 West and 500 North after staff and reviewers concluded traffic volumes and placement did not justify the expenditure.
Staff reported traffic counts similar to other nearby requests (approximately 300—10 vehicles per day during the sampling period) and reminded the committee that the roadway in question is not a major collector. A reviewer flagged the capital cost of the signs (about $2,500 each) and questioned whether the $5,000 estimate for two signs would be a good allocation of funds given the observed volumes.
A committee member added that the signs are most effective at locations where drivers transition between differing speed limits, and cited existing deployments where they have been useful on approaches to town. Based on engineering guidance and the data presented, a motion was made to deny the request. The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
Staff recorded the denial and will not move forward with procurement unless the requester returns with new data or a revised proposal.
