Resident asks commission to review tax treatment of egress windows installed for safety
Summary

During public comment, resident Lana Everdeen said she had installed egress windows in a house she manages on Veil Street and asked the commission to consider a change in how such safety-related improvements are treated for property taxes. Everdeen said she feared homeowners might avoid installing egress windows if the improvements increase assessed value and property taxes, and cited a recent basement fire in another municipality as part of her concern.
A staff member said the assessor could explain how taxes are assessed and that staff would get Everdeen in touch with the city assessor to discuss assessment procedures. No formal action was taken; the commission agreed to facilitate contact between the resident and the assessor so she could pursue the matter further.
