Commission backs grant application for Holiday Park pavilion after site review

The Alma City Commission voted to support the city’s application for a Grand (Gracia) County Parks and Recreation millage grant to build a pavilion at Holiday Park.
Dave Ringel, the city’s Public Services Director, presented a site sketch showing the proposed pavilion adjacent to the park’s existing basketball/pickleball courts. Ringel said the location was chosen for its view of the park, proximity to the courts and playground, and because an archaeological zone to the north prevents excavation there. He said an existing fire hydrant is about 40–50 feet from the proposed site and that the grant request includes funds, if allowed, for a drinking fountain and an electrical outlet for small appliances or a speaker system. Ringel described the pavilion size as roughly 24 by 24 feet, galvanized steel, with an expected useful life of several decades.
Commissioners asked staff about electrical capacity and accessibility; staff said the cost estimate assumed a meter and running electrical likely sized at about a 20-amp circuit and that moving the pavilion closer to parking or extending a sidewalk could be considered but would change utility routing and costs. With no public commenters stepping forward, the commission closed the hearing and passed a resolution supporting the grant application by voice vote.
The resolution directs staff to proceed with the application; final project design and siting decisions will follow, subject to grant funding and any required permits.
