Creekside Elementary highlights science gains, aims to boost reclassification of multilingual learners

Principal Will Franzel and Assistant Principal Cristina Mendoza told the board the Creekside community has cobuilt a vision and mission centered on equity and instructional innovation and shared data from the 2024–25 school year. Creekside has 557 students, including 175 emergent bilinguals (about 31% of enrollment). In 2024–25, 16 students reclassified from English learner status — about 9% of the site’s emergent bilingual population — and the school set a target to support 10% of emergent bilinguals to reclassify by May 2026.
Franzel said the school has fully operationalized an innovation lab for STEM learning and was recently featured by the California Association of Science Education for its K–12 science investments. "Our goal is to bring that innovation into every classroom every day," he said, and the school pointed to a 27% rate of fifth‑grade students meeting or exceeding state standards on the science assessment in 2024–25.
Creekside reported partial achievement of its SPSA goals last year and outlined a strategy to increase scores in English language arts, math and science by at least 7 percentage points across grades 3–6 this year. The school cited improved attendance, a PBIS platinum implementation award, an active instructional leadership team, weekly professional learning time and a 30/60/90 plan to keep school goals measurable and timebound.
Trustees praised the site’s emphasis on science and student engagement, and staff invited trustees and community members to visit classrooms and the innovation lab.
