Zion proclaims Feb. 11 as 2-1-1 Day; United Way presenters urge use of helpline

The Zion City Council on Feb. 4 proclaimed Feb. 11, 2025, as 2-1-1 Day in Zion and recognized 2-1-1 Lake County, a United Way–operated helpline that connects residents to health and human services.
Mayor Billie McKinney read the proclamation noting that 2-1-1 Lake County launched in 2019 and has connected more than 375,000 requests across Lake County. Gail Graves of 2-1-1 Lake County accepted the proclamation and told the council the service is available 24 hours a day by phone, text and online, and that the team has responded to hundreds of Zion requests in the past year.
The proclamation cites that 2-1-1 navigators make referrals for housing and shelter, utilities, employment and income support, mental health and addiction services, and food. The council moved to approve the proclamation; Commissioner Frierson made the motion and Commissioner McDowell seconded. The motion carried by roll call recorded as five ayes.
Graves encouraged council members and staff to report local service gaps so 2-1-1 can help connect residents to resources. Council members thanked United Way representatives and highlighted outreach to police, fire and school partners to publicize the service.
