Mercer County schools recognize student achievements including first state wrestling finalist and Governor’s Cup champions

The Mercer County School Board used its recognitions period to highlight student accomplishments across the district, including the district’s first state wrestling finalist, the high school academic team’s district championship, and two seniors named National Merit finalists.

Board members identified student award winners at multiple schools. The “perfect attendance” and character-based recognitions named winners at Marshall County Elementary School and Mercer County Intermediate School; the transcript lists Forrest Willam (Marshall County Elementary School) and Al Canden Banzo (Mercer County Intermediate School) as honorees. The board also called up four students for a monthly attendance-and-achievement award; names were read during the recognitions period.

The board noted athletic milestones: a fourth grader, identified in the meeting as John Roody Roos, was the district’s first state wrestling finalist, competing at 93 pounds in the 10-and-under division and finishing as state runner-up. Board members and meeting speakers praised the introduction and growth of the wrestling program and thanked coaches, including Coach Hampton and Coach Sellers, for their work bringing the sport to the schools.

Academic achievements were also highlighted. The high school academic team won the district Governor’s Cup championship and is scheduled to compete in regionals the coming Saturday at High Flower High School, which the board will host. Members of the district championship team were called forward, including Kate Carlton; the board wished them success at regionals.

The board recognized two seniors who became National Merit finalists, an honor the meeting described as “about 1% of 1% of all seniors in the nation.” The transcript names Georgia Grace Flutes as one of the finalists and Mason Thompson as a runner-up in an elementary-level competition referenced separately. The board said this was only the fourth time the district had multiple seniors named National Merit finalists.

Speakers also noted classroom- and facility-level developments: the district has added a greenhouse with a hydrophonics system (described in the transcript as “state of the art”), a project credited in part to a Mr. Hoover who “stayed out here for three years” to complete it. The choir director, Mr. Atkins, and several choir students were mentioned during recognitions.

The recognitions portion concluded with board members and staff expressing appreciation for students, coaches and teachers and noting the range of extracurricular and academic accomplishments across the district this year.
