Barrow County reports broad turnout for community strategic-planning session; staff to consolidate feedback

Deputy Superintendent Dr. Thompson reported that the district'led strategic-planning community engagement event drew about 240 attendees, including parents, community leaders and students. Attendees produced approximately 137 poster boards of feedback during strengths-weaknesses-opportunities-threats (SWOT) exercises, and participants later ranked priorities using stickers.
Thompson said facilitators included community leaders and school governance teams; Bethlehem Church hosted the event. Staff will consolidate overlapping themes and combine the community'gathered feedback with responses from a district survey that opened the evening of Oct. 28. The consolidated results and additional data (achievement, climate, finance) will be reviewed by a ~40-person planning team on Dec. 8 with the Georgia School Boards Association to develop strategic performance areas and measurable goals.
After that session, action teams will be assigned to develop tactics for each strategic objective; Thompson said tactics will be revisited regularly but performance areas will likely remain stable over the five-year strategic-plan period. Board members were invited to suggest additional community members for the Dec. 8 planning team; Thompson said a few parent and community slots remained open.
No formal action was required; the presentation summarized the process, turnout and next steps in the strategic planning timeline.
