Perry council designates two new school-speed-zone locations for signage

The City of Perry council on Oct. 28 authorized designation of two locations as school-speed zones so the city can install signage and publish times for reduced speeds.
Staff said the designations would cover Washington Street and Warner Avenue, serving private childcare or private-school sites that qualify under statute for signage. The chief explained that the designations allow the city to install signs and set times; camera-based enforcement would require a separate vehicle-speed survey to meet statutory requirements for automated enforcement.
Council action: A motion and second were recorded; roll call votes were entered in favor of authorizing the designations. Staff and the police chief noted that criminal penalties and enhanced sentencing provisions tied to school zones — such as enhanced penalties for certain drug crimes within specified distances — would remain in effect where statute applies.
Why it matters: Designation enables the city to add signage that alerts drivers to school-zone times and associated penalties. It also gives private early-education providers the signage needed for safety during drop-off and pick-up times.
