The Merrillville Town Council voted Tuesday to adopt Ordinance 25-30, appropriating $33,000 from the motor vehicle highway restricted fund to purchase and install a water tanker insert for an existing town truck.
Town staff told the council the current tanker was an older donated unit (cited as approximately 1979) and that retrofitting an insert into an existing chassis is a cost-effective alternative to buying a new tanker, which staff said could cost roughly $150,000.
The appropriation was advertised with a public hearing; Attorney Stepnoff confirmed the publication and opened the hearing. No members of the public offered comment, and council adopted the ordinance on second reading by roll call (7-0).
Staff said the project will proceed once appropriation is in place and that the purchase will be completed according to purchasing-code requirements.
