Community volunteers ask Fremont County School District #25 to support Tonkin memorial committee

“We're here just representing the potential Tonkin committee,” Watson told trustees. She outlined a phased approach: phase 1 would be a modest Tonkin memorial (for example, a plaque with a picnic table or gazebo and mown turf); later phases could expand to a larger park or event space if community interest and fundraising supported it.
Committee members said initial outreach had produced a small list of volunteers but that some community members were reluctant if the project was only a monument. They asked the board what approvals, parameters and maintenance responsibilities the district would require before the committee solicited broader community input and private donations.
Board members and the superintendent said routine grounds maintenance (mowing and watering) for a small monument and surrounding turf would likely be manageable by district staff if the installation were compact. The trustees and staff cautioned that any expanded plan requiring ongoing maintenance or new services would need separate funding or a nonprofit foundation to accept and steward private donations.
The presenters said they will refine a short public survey and seek broader community input. The board expressed support for the committee to move forward with outreach and asked the group to coordinate with the superintendent on next steps and communications.
No binding commitment of district funds or long-term maintenance was made at the meeting; trustees asked for further coordination with district staff.
