The Merrillville Town Council gave first reading and voted 7-0 to advance an ordinance authorizing general obligation bonds in a principal amount not to exceed $5,000,000 to fund infrastructure improvements, retrofit work and equipment purchases.
Town Manager Michael Griffin told council the bond proceeds would support several capital needs, including retrofitting the police department area of the municipal building, replacing the municipal roof, adding a fence at the municipal plant, funding park and welcome signage identified in the master plan, and replacing two department vehicles. Griffin also said staff hopes to designate a pool vehicle for shared use across departments.
Councilman Pettit moved approval of first reading; the motion passed on a roll call vote with all seven council members in favor. Griffin said the ordinance is on first reading and staff plans an additional procedural hearing about bond proceeds at a later meeting.
The ordinance as presented sets the principal cap at $5,000,000. Details about final amounts allocated to specific projects, bond terms, and timeline for issuance were not specified at first reading and will be finalized in subsequent proceedings.
