Council approves variance to allow Legacy Sports training center at 1201 E. 86th Place

The Merrillville Town Council voted unanimously Tuesday to grant a variance of use allowing Legacy Sports to operate an athletic training center at 1201 East 86th Place.

The petitioner, identified in the record as Alvin, said the facility will operate by membership and structured classes rather than an open-gym format. "This is not an open gym concept," Alvin said, describing weekday youth and high-school practice windows and Saturday positional and court training slots.

Council members asked whether the petitioner would occupy the entire building and about prior locations. Alvin told the council he previously operated at a Crossroads location on 60 First Avenue and expanded because of demand: "We're getting a lot of youth, athletes as well," he said, noting athletes come from local high schools and regional programs. He said the operation will have four employees (the petitioner, two sons and his wife), that participants will sign waivers, and that the petitioner holds insurance.

Councilor Pettit moved to approve the variance; the motion was seconded and carried on a 7-0 roll call. The clerk recorded votes in favor from Vice President Neal; Councilwoman Haines Edwards; Councilwoman Sam Lakoffin; Councilwoman Yuzwack; Councilman Pettit; Councilwoman Hardaway; and President Bello.

The approval applies to the petition as presented and to the site and use described to the council. No remonstrations were recorded in the meeting minutes or by the planning director at the public hearing.

With the variance granted, Legacy Sports may proceed with its planned tenant improvements and programming consistent with any conditions set by the planning department or the Board of Zoning Appeals.
