Commission approves YMCA banner program for central parking-lot posts

The New Canaan Community YMCA won approval Wednesday to install eleven two-sided vinyl banners on existing parking-lot light posts in the center of its South Avenue lot. Margaret Riley, the YMCA's executive director, said each banner will be 18 inches by 36 inches, mounted with brackets about 8to 9 feet above grade, and placed in the locations shown on the site plan. Riley said the banners will carry short inspirational two-word messages and will use four colors rotated across the posts; they will not be placed on the property perimeter adjacent to Saks Middle School, Putnam Road or South Avenue.
Staff explained that in residential zones institutions are permitted one 4-square-foot sign as of right and that larger mounted banners therefore require site-plan approval; the commission limited approval to the exact posts shown on the submitted plan. Commissioners asked about precedent for other institutional uses and about permanence; the YMCA said banners are permanent (24/7) and will be attached only in the designated central locations. No public opposition was raised at the hearing.
The commission voted to approve the banner installation during the meeting. Approval is conditioned on placement matching the location plan submitted to staff; other town signage and right-of-way restrictions noted in the file remain in place.
