District staff presented results of a planning survey on the 2026–27 school calendar and outlined next steps for stakeholder review and final board action in January.
The presenter said the survey window ran in October and that responses increased from the prior year, with about 500 more total respondents. Staff favored spreading professional development days through the year rather than front-loading them in August. "The most favorite option by far was a day before students return for the first day of school," the presenter said when describing preferences for a fall teacher workday; for spring, staff preferred a workday on the first day back from winter break.
Certified teachers opposed extending the instructional day by 30 minutes, while administrators and classified staff were more open to that option. For parent-teacher conferences, the most-favored option remained the existing model: Thursday evening with a half-day Friday. Respondents also favored keeping a full five-day fall break rather than shortening to a long weekend.
Staff outlined the calendar timeline: calendar committee meetings in early December, draft calendars presented to the board January 8, a stakeholder survey January 13–16 and possible board action January 22. Staff said they plan to include student leadership feedback and may survey students directly before the stakeholder vote.
The board asked staff to consider veterans and regional alignment with neighboring districts when finalizing options and suggested using in-class time or advisory periods to increase student response rates to the calendar survey.
No formal vote was taken during the discussion item; staff will return with draft calendars and stakeholder feedback.
