The Streator City Council on Oct. 14 approved Ordinance 2025‑42 rezoning 801 East Bridge Street from R‑1B single‑family residential to C‑3 general commercial and separately granted a special‑use permit permitting a self‑service storage facility at the site.
Petitioner Keith Schubert, identified by council as the property owner, operates existing storage units there as a legal nonconforming use. Council members said the rezoning and special use correct a discrepancy between the current land use and the zoning map and would provide clearer zoning for any future transfers of the property.
The planning commission conducted a noticed public hearing, found the proposal met code requirements for rezoning and special use, and recommended approval of both items. Commissioners also noted they may review broader regulations for self‑storage facilities and provide future code recommendations to council, including potential fencing or other site features.
Clerk roll call recorded Councilman Danko, Councilman Geary, Mayor Reid, Councilman Shire and Mayor Beda voting “aye” on both measures. The council indicated that if a future owner sought a different use permitted in C‑3, that use could require an additional special‑use review.
