Commissioners said a Sept. 8 presentation to Logansport City Council helped clarify what the Logansport Historic Preservation Commission does and how local designation differs from National Register listing.
Barbara Stein said she and other commissioners presented the commission's goals and recent projects; Deborah (Indiana Landmarks) delivered the central portion of the presentation and emphasized preservation's contribution to local economic development and that approvals of Certificate of Appropriateness requests nationwide are "over 90%," a figure she cited to reassure owners that designation is not typically restrictive.
Commissioners discussed the continuing public confusion about what different forms of designation mean for property owners. They resolved to provide repeated outreach to city council — at least annually — because council turnover can reduce institutional memory.
Deborah also told commissioners that Indiana Landmarks is reorganizing regions under a new CEO. Logansport will move out of Deborah's region starting in November; Deborah said she and Blake Swihart will provide transitional coverage, and Blake is expected to assume responsibility later. The Wabash office is being closed; Indiana Landmarks plans a Fort Wayne office in the longer term but said that is several years out.
Commissioners asked for materials that clearly explain local designation versus National Register status for distribution to owners and real-estate agents. Deborah said she would provide an article from the National Register and other resources for packet inclusion.
