Mayor Ryan J. Schrader read a proclamation recognizing Oct. 15 as White Cane Safety Day and declaring the month as White Cane Safety Month in the City of Delavan.
The proclamation noted that blindness and severe visual impairment affect many Wisconsin residents and described white canes and service animals as universally recognized symbols representing vision loss. The mayor noted Wisconsin’s white cane law requires motorists to stop before approaching within 10 feet of a pedestrian using a white cane or a service animal and said greater awareness of that law enhances safety for pedestrians, including children and older residents. He also urged consideration of pedestrian-safety features such as sidewalks, accessible pedestrian signals and curb ramps.
"On behalf of the residents of the city of Delavan, do hereby proclaim last week, Wednesday, October 15 and this month, White Cane Safety Day and Month in the city of Delavan and also acknowledge the importance of pedestrian safety year round," the mayor said.
The proclamation was entered into the council’s packet and announced during the communications portion of the meeting. No formal action or vote was required to read the proclamation.
