Bernalillo County creates speeding task force, to hire consultants and return recommendations

Bernalillo County commissioners voted Oct. 28 to establish a task force to study excessive speeding and traffic-safety measures and to seek outside technical assistance.
Commissioner Frank Baca, sponsor of the resolution, said the county should combine a local task force with outside consultants so residents and neighborhood associations inform any recommendations. "This is a large issue. It's a life or death issue," Baca said during debate. Commissioners amended the resolution to add the consultant language and lengthen the report deadline to 180 days to allow time for research and community input.
County staff said they had contacted the Texas A&M Transportation Institute and the institute—enter for Transportation Studies to join the consultant team; staff also recommended inviting municipal and village partners, including the city of Albuquerque and nearby local governments, to participate in the task force and review panels. The county intends to solicit best practices nationwide and test technologies or ordinance changes that may reduce excessive speeding.
The commission approved the amended resolution unanimously. The measure directs staff to form the task force, solicit consultant proposals, and return recommendations to the board following the study period.
Why it matters: Commissioners said excessive speeding has been raised repeatedly at neighborhood meetings and has public-safety implications. The task force and consultants are intended to catch and test solutions at scale and adapt practices for different parts of the county.
