Volunteers outline veterans banner program for Greenfield's main corridor

Volunteers told the Greenfield City Council on Oct. 28 about a new Veterans Banner Program designed to honor local service members by placing tribute banners along the city's main corridor.
"We recognize, honor, and appreciate our local veterans by placing tribute banners on our main corridor," volunteer Aaron Chavez said during a presentation. Chavez said the banners measure 30 inches by 75 inches; 18 veterans were confirmed for the initial round, with seven additional applications in progress. He said banners will be displayed twice a year around Veterans Day and Memorial Day and that the program is fully funded by donations so there is no cost to participating veterans.
Chavez gave details on application methods — online submission via a Google site or a paper application dropped off at American Legion Post 635 — and said volunteers will handle fabrication and coordination with the city for pole attachment. Council members expressed support for the program and thanked volunteers and donors; one council member noted banners are double-sided to allow more names to be displayed economically.
The council did not take formal legislative action; staff said the city would assist in placing banners once materials are delivered.
