Christie (Parks and Recreation staff) delivered the monthly parks and recreation report and outlined recent maintenance and program actions.
"Drew's been busy just completing a lot of the street side of things and help with winter activities," Christie said, adding that staff completed aeration at multiple parks and worked with Water and Streets to winterize the pool, restrooms, concession stands and the irrigation system.
Christie said she attended the South Dakota Parks and Recreation Association conference in Spearfish to exchange ideas with peers and to gather best practices. She has been benchmarking comparable pools on rates and operations as part of preparations to set local fees for passes and swim lessons.
On programming, Christie said surveys were distributed for football and soccer and that she would report a summary at the next meeting. She also launched a broad community recreation survey broken into age group categories (toddlers through adults) and said it received 85 responses in the first two hours and 136 responses at the time of the meeting.
Staff has inspected equipment and concession supplies in the storage shed between the two middle and softball fields and is compiling a list of items to replace before spring. Christie noted that batting-cage turf purchased through LBSA has been delivered and staff expects to install it before spring practices.
Christie said the department submitted an application to the South Dakota Urban and Community Forestry Program to place trees primarily at West Evergreen and some at Westerman Park; the grant is a matching program and the board budgeted approximately $3,700 as the local match should the application be awarded.
Board members raised siting questions about a dog park. Christie and others said the likely site is near the pool, to the south and across from an intersection, but that available nearby parcels and private ground between the desired connection points complicate a direct route to West Evergreen. The board also discussed that a parcel near the teaball field is for sale but noted crossing private property would be required to link to West Evergreen effectively.
Christie said she will continue to work on a social-media plan with city staff, prepare Sports Engine so schedules appear on mobile devices for spring soccer, and follow up on the survey results at an upcoming meeting.
