Wichita County received an update from the AgriLife Extension office on ongoing youth, public‑health and agricultural programming during its regular commissioners session.
Katrina, a 4‑H agent with AgriLife Extension, told the court, “We currently have 41 registered adult volunteers and I have a hundred and 53 4‑H'ers and Clover Kits.” She said the office moved into a new meeting room at 400 North Wall in Iowa Park, which staff now use several times a week for project meetings and club activities.
The report listed recent and upcoming activities: an “alpaca academy” and associated field trip to Goshen Farms in Sanger; CPR and first‑aid classes; stop‑the‑bleed and Narcan information training; soap‑making; district 4‑H contests including livestock judging, trap shoot and a district food show and food‑challenge event; and frequent shooting‑sports programming, which staff described as one of the county’s largest 4‑H projects. Katrina said the office is validating livestock entries for county and spring shows and that leaders hope to recruit more youth before a Nov. 1 4‑H membership fee increase.
Meredith Atlee, family and community health agent, described health‑focused programming. “A lot of the last few months for me has been some training, networking, things like that,” Atlee said, adding that she has established a program area committee and is running chair Tai Chi and healthy‑aging activities at the MLK Center and Burke Library. She and extension colleagues completed National Child Passenger Safety certification to support car‑seat checks and said they have access to replacement seats through surrounding counties.
County agents described continuing work for producers: a plant pathology professional‑development effort tied to Texas A&M, pesticide CEU courses planned for December, and local wheat, cotton, sesame and hemp trials and field tours. Dwayne, a county extension agent, said the office is working with master gardeners on a new training class and that past seed‑rate research could yield savings if widely adopted.
The extension staff asked commissioners and residents to note several scheduled events, including district contests, a Veterans Day parade float, Tractor Supply “Clover Days” after Thanksgiving and a winter awards session at the 4‑H center in Brownwood.
The presentation did not include any formal action or funding requests.
