City planning staff told the council they will file a zoning-text amendment to reclassify data centers (listed as data processing, hosting and related services) from permitted uses to conditional uses in five commercial and light-industrial zoning districts. Director of Community Development Jason Jagie said the change would require future data-center proposals to undergo public review by the Planning & Zoning Commission and the city council.
Jagie cited public attention and potential impacts including heavy utility demand (electricity and water for cooling) and possible noise. He described the proposed interim approach as a way to ensure public review and compatibility analysis for any applications that come forward. Staff proposed a Planning & Zoning Commission public hearing on Nov. 17 and subsequent council consideration in late November or early December.
No ordinance was adopted at the meeting; the item was presented as a forthcoming text amendment and scheduling plan.
