Board discusses districtwide expansion of women’s wrestling; staff to provide participation data and coach input

Miss Barnhart asked the board for an open discussion about expanding women’s wrestling districtwide after Laney High School established a women-only team. Trustees said they support expansion in principle and asked staff to provide updated participation data by high school and to invite Laney’s coach to answer questions about recruitment and program development.
District staff said authorization to form separate women’s wrestling teams has been offered to all high schools; programs that remain coed typically lack sufficient female participants but district athletic directors and wrestling coaches are actively recruiting. Miss Barnhart said she would resend previously distributed participation and team-status data ahead of the discussion.
Trustees asked staff to include a coach or program representative if possible when the board takes up the matter as part of the next agenda.
