Board schedules discussion on sustaining and expanding pre-K funding; district to include budget options

Doctor Tim Merrick and other trustees urged a long-range plan, noting the district previously received six county-funded pre-K classrooms that were later rescinded. Trustees asked whether county MOUs, NC Pre-K certification (which would allow billing for eligible children), and budgeting options could be part of the conversation. Staff said funding and possible certification will be part of the upcoming budget-process discussion and that two district-run sites could, if certified, bill NC Pre-K and defray some costs.
Trustees also said universal pre-K carries long-term academic benefits and requested current pre-K enrollment counts and options for expanding program capacity as part of the district’s budget cycle.
