Delaware County proclaims October Domestic Violence Awareness Month; sheriff cites nearly 1,200 calls since Jan. 2024

The Delaware County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 13 approved resolution 25-823 proclaiming October Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Delaware County. The board also heard a briefing from Sheriff Jeff Balzer on domestic violence calls, case reporting and available community support services.
Sheriff Jeff Balzer told the board that from Jan. 2024 through Oct. 1, the sheriff’s office had recorded nearly 1,200 calls for service related to domestic violence, with 366 reports taken and 305 arrests. "Most of those, the majority go to municipal court, 295 of them," Balzer said, and he emphasized that domestic violence occurs across all socioeconomic groups.
Balzer highlighted partnerships with the county prosecutor’s office and local victim services, including Turning Point, and urged people in dangerous situations to reach out to law enforcement or victim advocates. Commissioners and staff noted that published statistics reflect cases known to authorities and that domestic violence is likely more widespread than official reports indicate.
The board passed the proclamation by voice vote (Res. 25-823). Commissioners Jeff Benton, Barb Lewis and Gary Merrill signed the proclamation, which the board said would be used to raise awareness of victim services and local resources.
