Michael Corcoran, the town's director of public safety, told the council Oct. 28 that two new officers recently completed training and were sworn in at the meeting, strengthening staffing for a newly created traffic safety unit and an expanded community engagement unit.
Corcoran said officers Mayor and Greene (as named in the minutes) completed training and would support both the public-safety outreach and traffic efforts. Chief Donald Richardson also addressed the council to thank staff and noted the department's ongoing work.
Corcoran said the traffic-safety unit will be rolled out "in a couple weeks," and the department is coordinating with other partners on enforcement and walking-downtown patrols funded in part through a partnership (the Morristown Partnership) to deploy downtown walking officers. Council members noted two newly sworn officers would assist enforcement priorities noted during public comment, such as e-bike enforcement and pedestrian-safety concerns.
The swearing-in was part of the evening's ceremonial items; the council later referenced enforcement options during a discussion of e-bike incidents and noted that police have the authority to hold confiscated e-bikes for 24 hours under current local enforcement procedures.
